The Trueness Project

Why is Women Empowerment Still a Global Priority?

For decades, the phrase women empowerment has echoed across global platforms, community programs, and policy conversations. Through various programs, women have been encouraged to lead, learn, and claim their space.

Many might argue that the world has done enough, and the time has come to shift attention elsewhere. It’s true, more women are earning degrees, holding offices, leading companies, and shaping conversations that once excluded them.

Yet, still much remains unachieved, demanding continued action for a better society.

The gender pay gap persists. Millions of girls still lack education and safety. Many women continue to face violence, discrimination, and limited leadership opportunities.

Does it mean that, for all the years women empowerment has been undertaken, so little impact has been made across the world?

And if so, why is that the case?

In this article, The Trueness Project discusses the existing gaps in women empowerment programs and what needs to be done differently to accelerate impact.

Let’s break it down.

What Entails Women Empowerment?

Women empowerment is a deliberate effort to give women the freedom, confidence, and opportunity to take charge of their lives and contribute transformatively to society.

Transformative women empowerment entails:

  • Expanding access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for girls and women.
  • Promoting economic independence through entrepreneurship, skills training, and equitable job opportunities.
  • Ensuring women’s full participation and leadership in decision-making at all levels of society.
  • Advocating for gender equality and the elimination of harmful cultural and social norms.
  • Providing access to quality healthcare, including menstrual and reproductive health services.
  • Creating safe environments free from gender-based violence and discrimination.
  • Inspiring confidence, self-awareness, and collective action among women and girls to shape their futures.

5 Benefits of Empowering Women

An empowered woman is an empowered generation. And why is that the case? Here are the key benefits of impactful women empowerment programs:

1. Advancing Gender Equality and Social Progress
Empowerment breaks the cycle of inequality that keeps women at the margins. It balances social structures, strengthens justice, and builds communities where both men and women contribute to development, uplifting everyone.

2. Fostering Economic Growth and Innovation
When women participate fully in the economy, productivity rises. Women-owned businesses drive job creation, spark innovation, and boost GDP growth

3. Improved Health and Education Outcomes
Empowered women make better health and education decisions for themselves and their families. They invest in nutrition, schooling, and wellbeing, creating healthier generations and stronger societies.

4. Poverty Reduction
Financially independent women support families, start businesses, and reinvest in their communities. Empowering women is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty and promote lasting stability.

5. More Representation and Effective Leadership
When women occupy decision-making spaces, they contribute to making leadership more responsive, compassionate, and inclusive. Empowering women ensures that policies reflect the experiences of the whole population, not just a portion of it.

Challenges Facing Women Empowerment Programs

Here are the main challenges facing women empowerment efforts:

Patriarchal Norms
Patriarchy is a social system where men hold primary power and dominate in leadership, authority, and privilege. Such a belief limits women and girls’ education, employment, and leadership opportunities.

Limited Access to Resources
Access to capital, technology, and land ownership remains heavily skewed. Many women lack the tools to start businesses or pursue innovation.

Policy Gaps and Weak Implementation

While many countries have gender equality policies, poor enforcement and lack of accountability weaken their impact.

Violence and Discrimination
From gender-based violence to workplace harassment, many women still face threats that silence them. The fear of retaliation or shame keeps countless voices unheard and talents untapped.

Underrepresentation
Women are still significantly underrepresented in politics, science, and leadership roles. This makes it hard to implement the right policies affecting women because they are not at the decision-making tables. Resultantly, more policies often fail to address their real needs or perspectives.

How Nonprofits Can Redefine Women Empowerment

Now that we have addressed the benefits of empowering women and the challenges that hinder these efforts, how can nonprofits impactfully empower women and make it easy for other organizations to do the same?

  1. Implement Gender-Transformative Approaches
Go beyond addressing symptoms of inequality. Challenge social norms, power dynamics, and institutional barriers that sustain gender imbalance.
  2. Focus on Systemic and Policy Change
Advocate for stronger gender-sensitive laws and policies, ensuring they are well-implemented and monitored for real impact. Use gender-sensitive policies in your nonprofit so that you are an example.
  3. Start and Push Conversations about Women Empowerment
Create safe spaces for dialogue, awareness, and storytelling to shift mindsets and inspire action in communities.
  4. Introduce Women Empowerment Programs
Design programs that promote self-reliance, confidence, leadership, and access to opportunities for women and girls, and implement them in the communities, workplace, and various other spaces.
  5. Advocate for Gender Equality across Industries
Partner with organizations to promote equal pay, representation, and opportunities for women in all sectors.
  6. Leverage Technology and Innovation
Develop or use existing digital tools to enhance access to education, financial inclusion, mentorship, and global networking for women.
  7. Provide Access to Education and Training
Equip women and girls with academic, digital, and vocational skills to expand their exposure, choices, and competitiveness. Sponsor the needy among them, or even start and run schools where they’re needed most.
  8. Create Job Opportunities and Promote Women’s Leadership
Absorb women into your organization as volunteers, staff, or consultants, and encourage other organizations to prioritize women in hiring, promotions, and leadership roles to close the opportunity gap.
  9. Support Women-Owned Businesses and Entrepreneurs
Fund, mentor, and collaborate with women-led enterprises; buy from them, use their services, and amplify their visibility.

Empowering Women with The Trueness Project

At The Trueness Project, women and girls remain at the center of our mission.

Since our establishment, we have visited dozens of girls’ schools, donating sanitary pads and leadership and financial literacy books, and offering mentorship talks to inspire confidence and growth.

At Kereri Girls High School in Kenya, we introduced a book authorship initiative and guided 18 students and 2 teachers in writing and publishing their own leadership book, proving that empowerment deepens when young women learn to own and share their stories.

As we expand our work through Flag Football in Kenya and across Africa, women and girls continue to remain at the forefront of the movement. We see sports as a bridge to discipline, teamwork, and leadership, values that shape stronger communities.

Our focus is to keep opening spaces where everyone, including women and girls, can thrive, learn, and lead with dignity. Every story we ignite, every voice we uplift, brings us closer to a balanced world.
